Studies have shown that advocate kills fleas fast and without the necessity of biting,1 so in most cases fleas have no chance to transmit pathogens. Effective flea prevention also reduces the risk of flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), the most common skin disease seen in companion animal practices in most parts of the world. What is advocate? Advocateis a topical spot on for use on dogs and cats. Advocateis effective against fleas, flea larvae, ear mites, sarcoptic mange mites, demodectic mange mites, lice, immature and mature stages of roundworms, hookworms and adult whipworms and lungworms. It prevents heartworms, lungworms and skinworms and also treats circulating microfilaria. At what age can advocatebe used on dogs and cats? Advocatecan be used on dogs from 7 weeks of age and over 1kg in weight. Advocatecan be used on cats from 9 weeks of age and over 1kg in weight. What are the active ingredients in advocate for dogs and advocate for cats? Advocate for dogs: 10% imidacloprid & 2.5% moxidectin. Advocate for cats: 10% imidacloprid & 1% moxidectin. Is the efficacy of advocate affected by water? Brief contact of the animal with water on one or two occasions between monthly treatments will notsignificantly reduce the efficacy of the product. However, immersion in water directly after treatment may reduce the efficacy of the product. Is advocate safe for use on pregnant and lactating dogs and cats? Both active ingredients have individually shown no problems with use during pregnancy. Reproductive safety studies with advocate have not been completed to date and thus the safety of advocate has not been established during pregnancy and lactation. Can I use advocate for dogs on cats or advocate for cats on dogs? NO, as advocate for dogs contains a different level of the active ingredient moxidectin than the level contained in the product for cats. The concentration of moxidectin for both is based on efficacy and drug behavior in each respective species. It is important to use the specific cat or dog product to ensure the products effectiveness in the target species. What size of advocate do I use on a cat over 8kg of body weight? Cats over 8kg should be treated with the appropriate combination of tubes. What size of advocate do I use on a dog over 40kg? Dogs weighing over 40kg should be treated with the appropriate combination of tubes. Can I shampoo my dog after application? Brief contact of the animal with water on one or two occasions between monthly treatments will not significantly reduce the efficacy of the product. However, frequent shampooing or immersion in water after treatment may reduce the efficacy of the product. Sebolytic shampoos strip the lipid layer completely. The lipid layer takes 1-4 days to regenerate. Advocate can be applied to animals treated with a sebolytic shampoo after this time period. Is it important to test dogs for heartworm before applying advocate ? In endemic areas, advocate may be safely administered to heartworm infected dogs. However, it is recommended that all dogs 6 months of age or over should be tested for patent heartworm infections before beginning prophylactic medication for the first time. Dogs that are heartworm positive should be treated appropriately. Heartworm and travelling Heartworm prevention is a must for pets travelling to or living in endemic areas. Heartworm status checks are recommended for pets who live in or have travelled to endemic areas. Can you use advantix and advocate concurrently in dogs? Yes, to control fleas, as well as ticks, flies and mosquitoes the use of advantix and advocate is necessary. Our suggestion is to first treat with advocate and then treat with advantix a week later or alternate on a 2-weekly basis. Can advocate be used concurrently with a Seresto collar? Advocate can safely be used concurrently with Seresto also protect your pet against ticks.
